Professional Interests

Professor Cobb joined the department in 1970. Prior to this he was an Assistant Technical Officer at the Naval Weapons Center, China Lake, California and then an Engineer for the Esso Research Laboratories in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Professor Cobb's current research involves the development, evaluation, demonstration and commercialization of a set of biomass energy-related processes:

  • Co-firing waste wood and coal into stoker and fluid-bed boilers
  • Gasification of waste wood and switchgrass
  • Pelletization of switchgrass and waxed cardboard for home stoves
  • Anaerobic digestion of animal wastes

Professor Cobb consults with a number of agencies and companies on projects related to biomass energy.

Professor Cobb's current service involves assistance to the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Allegheny County:

  • Past Chair of AIChE's Career and Education Operating Council
  • Chair of the Chemical Engineering Subcommittee of NCEES' Fundamentals of Engineering Examination Committee
  • Member, Pennsylvania Biomass Working Group, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture
  • Member, Air Advisory Committee, Allegheny County Health Department
