Calculation of Student's QPA

Only credits and quality points earned by students at the University of Pittsburgh are used in the calculation of the QPA.

Probation/Dismissal

A student can only be placed on academic probation if their cumulative QPA is less than a 2.00. As long as their cumulative QPA is a 2.00 or better and they are making satisfactory progress towards their degree then they are considered to be in good academic standing. Students who receive less than a 2.00 QPA for a term, but whose cumulative remains above a 2.00 will be issued a warning letter.

If a student's overall QPA is less than 2.00 for two consecutive terms, they will be subject to suspension or dismissal from the School of Engineering. Students who are suspended may reapply for admission after one year. Students who are dismissed are not permitted to return to the School of Engineering.

Honors List

Term List:

Student must have (1) earned a term QPA of at least 3.25, (2) completed a minimum of 15 credits of academic work for letter grades at the University of Pittsburgh, (3) completed a minimum of 6 credits of work for letter grades in the term of eligibility.

Dean's List:

Student must have (1) earned a QPA of 3.25 for both cumulative and term, (2) completed a minimum of 30 credits of academic work for letter grades at the University of Pittsburgh, (3) completed a minimum of 6 credits of work for letter grades in the term of eligibility.

Graduating with Honors

To be considered for honors at graduation, a student must earn at least 60 credits at the University of Pittsburgh.
• For graduation with cum laude honors, a student must have a final QPA of 3.25.
• For graduation with magna cum laude honors, a student must have final QPA of 3.50.
• For graduation with summa cum laude honors, a student must have final QPA of 3.75.

Course Repeat Policy

A course in which any passing grade of a D- or higher was obtained is not required to be repeated.

Grades can be replaced if:

A course resulting in a grade of C- or lower may be repeated. The grade earned by repeating the course will then replace the previous grade earned (in calculating the QPA), although the original grade will not be erased from the transcript. The repeated course must be the same course in which the original grade was earned.
No sequence course may be repeated for credit after a higher-numbered sequence course has been passed with a C or higher.
No course may be repeated more than twice. For the purposes of this rule, grades of W, N, or R do not count as repeats.
No course grade may be replaced by a course taken at another institution.
The Course must be repeated within a year of initially completing the course. In other words, a course taken in Fall Term 01-1 can be taken again for grade replacement in the Spring Term 01-2, Summer Term 01-3, or Fall Term 02-1. If you cannot accomplish this due to your co-op schedule or the timing of the class being offered, you must petition the Undergraduate Coordinator for a waiver.
