Faculty & Staff National AcademyFounded in 1964, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) provides engineering leadership in service to the nation. Members are elected to NAE membership by their peers (current NAE members) and election to membership is one of the highest professional honors accorded an engineer. Members have distinguished themselves in business and academic management, in technical positions, as university faculty, and as leaders in government and private engineering organizations. The Swanson School of Engineering is proud of our eight National Academy of Engineering Members: Bernard L. Cohen—Professor Emeritus (retired). For fundamental contributions to our understanding of low-level radiation. James D. Fletcher—Professor (deceased). For technical contributions to military science and leadership in their application, particularly in communications, guidance, command, and control for space and missile systems. Albert G. Holzman—Former Chair of Industrial Engineering (deceased). For his industrial engineering accomplishments in optimization theory, computer integrated manufacturing, multi-criteria decision making, linear programming, and information systems. Frederick Pohland—Former Edward R. Weidlein Chair (deceased). For advancing the theory of anaerobic treatment processes and applications to solid waste management. Jerome Schultz—Former Distinguished University Professor. For integration of biological membrane transport and molecular recognition mechanisms for practical separation devices and bioanalytical sensors. Marwan Simaan—Bell of PA/Bell Atlantic Professor. For contributions to the development of signal processing techniques for imaging the earth's subsurface zone. Max L. Williams, Jr.—Distinguished Service Professor and Dean of Engineering (retired). For fundamental developments in fracture mechanics and for providing guidance to industry and government that has facilitated technology transfer. Savio L-Y Woo—Whiteford Professor. For contributions to orthopedic biomechanics and tissue engineering and understanding of sports injury, repair, and remodeling. |
