WELCOME FUTURE STUDENTS!

From the Freshman Engineering Program Office

Welcome to the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering! As you browse our website or take a virtual tour of our campus we believe you will find our University to be distinctive, academically stimulating, and diverse. As one of the oldest engineering schools in the United States, we pride ourselves on keeping up with ground-breaking research and technology and providing hands-on classroom instruction by dedicated faculty for over 150 years.

As a Pitt Engineering student you will receive the kind of personal attention all college students deserve. We have approximately 2,000 undergraduate students in the School of Engineering and the student to faculty ratio is 17:1. We also have an office solely dedicated to the needs of our freshman engineering students. As a freshman engineer you will be assigned a professional academic advisor in the Freshman Program Office who will monitor your academic progress, schedule your classes, make you aware of all of the resources available to you, help with your adjustment from high school to college, and much more.

We offer 9 engineering majors, state of the art facilities, internationally recognized faculty, and world-renowned research all on a diverse, energetic urban campus. Our research benefits greatly from the close relationship between the school and the internationally renowned teaching and research hospitals of the University of Pittsburgh’s Medical Center which has resulted in the establishment and expansion of the bioengineering program.

In addition to personal attention and hands-on classroom instruction, we offer experiential learning and study abroad opportunities for all of our students. More than half of all undergraduate students participate in our award winning co-operative education program and each year hundreds of students participate in our comprehensive undergraduate research program through which they team up with faculty for individual research projects. Recognizing the increasing need for globalizing your education in the field of engineering we have developed many study abroad and/or internship programs for academic credit ranging from 2 week programs to semester long opportunities.

Come and visit us for a School of Engineering tour and information session to help better understand the many exciting opportunities available to you as a Pitt Engineering student!
