Associate Professor and Fulton C. Noss Faculty Fellow, Industrial Engineering

Mary Besterfield-Sacre, Associate Professor and Fulton C. Noss Faculty Fellow in the Department of Industrial Engineering, has received recognitions for her excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship.

Teaching Accolades and Interests

Named the 2004 Beitle-Veltri Teaching Award recipient and voted to the Outstanding IE Faculty in 2001, Sacre’s contributions both in and out of the classroom are evident. She has supported more than 20 graduate students and 30 undergraduate students with her research funding, and has taught statistics and quality control at the undergraduate level for six years. Dr. Sacre’s teaching interests are primarily in the area of statistics and quality control.

Research Interests

Sacre’s principal research interests are in empirical and cost modeling applications for quality improvement in manufacturing and service organizations, and in engineering education evaluation methodologies. In the area of assessment and evaluation, Sacre has written numerous conference and journal papers and has given many workshops and presentations. Her research in this area has been funded by the NSF, Department of Education, Sloan Foundation, Engineering Information Foundation, and the NCIIA. She gave the presentation “Assessment Methods for Assessing Outcomes,” at the 2006 National Engineering and Technology Education Conference (NETEC), held in Taipei, Taiwan on January 13, 2006.

Recently, she was named associate editor for the Journal of Engineering Education. Additionally, she co-authored the book Total Quality Management, 3rd Edition (Prentice Hall).

About Mary Besterfield-Sacre

Prior to joining the faculty, Sacre worked as an industrial engineer with Alcoa and with the U.S. Army Human Engineering Laboratory. She received her BS in engineering management from the University of Missouri at Rolla, her MS in industrial engineering from Purdue University, and a PhD in industrial engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.
