MSI Summer Researchers

Undergraduate Summer Research Program

Every summer since 2004, the Mascaro Sustainability Initiative (MSI) has sponsored the Undergraduate Summer Research Program (URP) in Sustainable Engineering, a 12-week program that pairs undergraduate students with faculty mentors in engineering. The aim of URP is to provide students with hands-on, focused research in sustainable engineering.

Featured here are Patricia Nichols and Todd Locker, two of ten students who participated this past year. Under the direction of Laura Schaefer, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and John Barnard, director of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the students gained valuable research experience that complements their education.

Patricia’s Research

Patricia, a junior in materials science and engineering, focused her summer research on the filtration of nanoparticles. By using drop shape analysis, she was able to investigate the interaction between water, nanoparticles, and filter membranes. Patricia explains, “This study is important to ensure water purity and prevent undesired nanoparticle transport into the environment.”

Todd’s Research

Todd is a junior in mechanical engineering. He spent the summer researching a variety of ways to reduce CO2 emissions in power plants in an attempt to generate clean, environmentally friendly power. Todd believes this research is important “for future generations. Imagine less air pollution!”

Campus Life

Both Patricia and Todd are also active in extra-curricular activities offered through the Swanson School of Engineering and the University. Patricia plays the trumpet in both the Pitt marching band and concert band. Todd participates in the Swanson School of Engineering Co-op Program, and was recently employed by Weyerhaeuser Corporation, an international forest products company that produces softwood lumber, pulp, paper, and packaging products.
