News Society of Automotive EngineersStudents Race to the TopThe Formula SAE competition, sponsored by Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors, and sanctioned by the Society of Automotive Engineers, gives students the opportunity to design, build, and compete with Formula-style racecars. The yearly competition in Detroit, Michigan, hosts 140 teams from 12 countries. Entries are limited to four-stroke engines with a maximum displacement of 610 cc and a 20 mm intake restrictor. Rules are established to maintain safety while encouraging innovative designs.
The cars are designed entirely by students and primarily student built. Invaluable experience in the fields of engineering, manufacturing, teamwork, and business management/communications is gained in the process. All of the students pictured happen to be pursuing degrees in mechanical engineering, but Formula SAE is open to students across the University of any major. Pictured above, from left to right, are: Andrew Moore, Ashley Guzzetta, Jared Garvey, Matei Sarbu, Alex Geise, and Justin D'Antonio. Read more, and see photos of the car at various stages of design. |
